I wake up at 06:00 and start cleaning and pack up the camp, leaving nature as unaffected by our visit as possible. An hour later I wake Morten up so that we can take off. We leave at approximately 07:45, and today the currents make the paddling easier.
We reach Koh Chang after about 2 hours, but we have to go around to the other side of the island, so we take a short stop along the way on a deserted beach to regain some energy and eat some nuts and fruit before the final leg.
After 20 mins we continue, and what awaits us is an absolutely magical long beach where Morten start looking for a bungalow while I watch the kayak.
We decide to spend the night at Omtao bungalow, simple but nice bungalows and nice German owners who are very curious about what our plan is when they notice that we arrive in a kayak, so I tell her about my dream which has now become true.
We relax and take a well-deserved shower before going on a little trip to see the island and eat a couple of meals before sitting down at Sunset bungalow with a beer to watch the beautiful sunset.
While we sit there a very sweet girl approaches us and ask if I can take a picture of her while she’s meditating under the sunset, and naturally I’m offering my help. As soon as she sits down to have her pictures taken, two dogs come running to join in on the photo.
She then sits down with us, and we begin to talk about traveling, work and much more. We stay in the bar enjoying a snack and a few more beers and also start talking to the other residents and travelers, and in this tiny community many of them have already heard about the crazy Norwegians who arrived in a kayak.
When the bar closes and all the lights are put out we decide to have another beer, and being at a wonderful beach like this at nighttime, what’s more natural than to go skinny dipping? As we get into the water, luminous plankton light up the sea around us whenever we move, just like in the movie «The Beach». All of a sudden a shoal of small fish begin to bite us everywhere, which tickles a lot. After a while in the water we get out and finish our beers before going to bed.
The day after I wake up as usual at 06:00 and take a walk on the beach before grabbing a coffee and sit down to meditate along the shore for a couple of hours. When Morten wake up we enjoy a nice breakfast at Sunset Bungalow. We decide to postpone the trip to the next day and rather enjoy another day in this paradise to get an early start the next day. While we’re sitting there enjoying the beach, a mother and her son who we met the day before ask us if we want to go see a pond on the island. The others decide to just stay and chill on the beach, while I agree to come along. After a 30 minute walk through the jungle and rubber tree plantations we finally arrive, and what awaits us i a lovely man-made water reservoir, and as we get closer I recognize a cute face who got there ahead of us by taking a shortcut.
I dive in with her, and we take a swim together and exchange flirtatious glances. After a while more people arrive to have a refreshing swim in the water. Me and my flirt head back through a path that leads us past a salt desert, and at this point I take her hand, we look into each others eyes and kiss.
Just before arriving back at the beach bar, we walk past a Swedish girl who is giving a man a haircut, and she asks me if I would also like one. I need one, so my answer is as always yes.
The other lady heads back to her bungalow while I get a new hairdo, and me and the Swedish hairdresser start chatting while she cuts my hair. The name of this informal hair salon is «Banana Beauty Salon». A haircut at this place is highly recommended, and you pay whatever you think is the right price for a haircut. When the haircut is completed I’m invited to join a homemade lunch, and again my answer is yes. I tell my story about traveling and they tell me theirs and provide some useful advice about when it is best to cross over to Koh Phayam. I thank them for the food, haircut and good advice, and walk back to the beach bar to meet the others. The rest of the day involves snuggling, food and some beer, and Morten joins in on a game of volleyball before we find our beds for the night.
The morning after I’m a little sad as I have fallen in love with this paradise and all the lovely people. I kiss my flirt goodbye and hug the others with a promise of coming back sometime. The owner of the bungalow also left a note for us and a crystal that we’re supposed to throw into the sea and make a wish for dolphins to come and say hello during our journey.
If you’re looking for an island where you can relax completely, go on a hike, do yoga, snorkel or sunbathe with like-minded hippies, this is the right place for you. If you’re looking for wild parties, then this is not the right place for you. 🙂
